touchstones

This past spring I read this blog post,
and I find it fascinating, the security and love
behind these simple gestures between a child and parent.

I saw it last week, while Cordie was at her sickest,
she kept coming to my bedside throughout the night,
when I asked what she needed she would whisper, "you."
So I laid on the floor next to her bed, then she asked, "you hold my hand please?"
and I did.
When I thought she was in a deep sleep,
I tried to sneak out and head to my warm cozy bed,
but she would jerk awake and whine for me to stay,
and I did, and thank goodness at 27 I can still sleep on the floor.

I see it when Penny climbs a little too high (her little purple stool)
or finds herself stuck,
and she whines and cries till either Levi and I go in,
as soon as we're within arms length she just throws her body to us and melts into our arms.

I see it when Sonora heads into a new and unknown situation,
like when we went to sign her up for school,
and as we waited in the office she stood as close to me as she possibly could,
slightly on top of my toes.

I am aware of my own times when I am visit with my parents,
how a simple hand squeeze from my mom (remember she has the softest hands),
or big hug from my dad (his are best)
can relax my nerves and leave me feeling loved.

But it doesn't just end there,
as children of God,
loved by the perfect Father,
His Word can be our touchstone to him,
we retreat to Him in our prayers.
After my melancholy weekend, that reached its peak last night,
I find this morning, while reaching for my touchstone,
that I remember who I am,
whose I am.

And I am greatly encouraged by how John concludes his first letter:

"And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding,
so that we may know him who is true;
and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ.
He is the true God and eternal life.
Little children, keep yourselves from idols."
1 John 5:20-21

April 10

10 Awesome Things about My Guy

1. His love for coffee rivals my own. He is my favorite coffee date.

2. He is the best girl dad.
(Our three are so blessed to have him as a father, which means God knew what He was doing all along.)

3. He always smells good, like really good.
(Seriously, check if you don't believe me)

4. He is the funniest person you'll ever meet.
(but, don't ask him to be funny, that just stresses him out)

5. He works so hard at absolutely everything he does.

6.  He doesn't let me win. ever.
(Once he even made me cry, because I am a sore loser)

7. He is about as loyal as they come.

8. He loves me well.

9.  He gets really passionate about God's Kingdom

10. He helps me clean.
(Boo ya!)

sunshine and s'more cookies.

I smile so big when I think about this weekend.
So good.
We really needed that.
The weather was perfect,
so we soaked up every ounce of sunshine we could.

And as the sun set, we made a fire.
N was begging to roast big marshmallows,
but i didn't have any graham crackers!
OH NO!
Tell me, what good are roasted marshmallows
if you can't make s'mores?
(I may have been a little desperate for chocolate)
So, I created our s'more cookie!

S'more Cookies - Greer Style
What you'll need (I doubled this recipe to make the measurements easier) :

1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
(we love dark, you could use milk for a more authentic a'more flavor)
large roasting marshmallows

Cream butter and brown sugar.  Add egg and vanilla and mix well.
Sift in dry ingredients and blend. Add chocolate chips.
Bake @ 350* for 7-10 minutes. While cookies are baking,
have a sweet little girl roast some marshmallows. Transfer marshmallow
to the top of the cookie and flatten (these are rrrreeaallyy gooey).

Enjoy with an ice cold bottle of root beer!

P.S. this happy happy girl got to go on a special lunch date with her wonderful daddy!

How was your weekend? Did you create/make something?
